Back Door Winery in Summerland puts new life into a rich vein of local history. Maybe on the surface, the Prohibition-era town was bone dry, but behind locked doors, a whole, otherworldly underground system of bootlegging brewed. Locals, be it the owner of the Victoria Cafe or some peach orchardists with brains more cunning than most, barreled up the elixir in hidden basements. You needed the right knock to get in, and if you did, you were in for a taste of rebellion.

Fast forward to 1953, when Summerland finally got its first legal liquor store, and today, Back Door Winery is continuing to pay homage to that cheeky past. Under the guidance of Jesse Gill, the winery has taken a historic piece of land and turned it into a dynamic vineyard that celebrates Summerland’s spirited history while offering up some seriously fantastic wines.

With every sip, Back Door Winery brings a taste of Summerland’s rebellious roots into your glass, but with a modern twist. From their stellar wines in the tasting room to a private tour, this winery is all about embracing its past while crafting wines that stand proudly on their own.
